Exploring Nilgiris

Exploring Nilgiris - A Picnic at Sims Botanical garden

One Earth Foundation’s two initiatives My Village, My Pride and Umeed joined hands for an excursion to the famous botanical gardens of Coonoor, Sims Park. The Green Champions of the My Village My Pride Initiative participate in this monthly excursion where they visit the “Must See”  places of Nilgiris that highlight its cultural and natural wealth.  This Month we divided to include the wonderful children from our Children s Home in this excursion.  Mrs Manju Mann from Umeed, organized for the children from our home to be part of this event. Mr. Kannan organized the participation of the Children from My Village My Pride initiative. The group was about 25 strong and the day began with all assembling at the entrance of Sims Park in Coonoor at 1000 Hrs.  Ms Tarika, Sidarth, Anirudh and Tarun (students from Bangalore and Mumbai) were the planners and hosts for this event.  They had painstakingly organized the games, snacks, etc  Excitement was high and the children were eager to get inside the Park.  The groups were introduced to each other and soon they were off to the play ground in the park.

In the next 3 hours several games and sports events were conducted and the children enjoyed boating in the small lake in Sims Park.  A very special vote of thanks goes out to Mr & Mrs Viren Popli from Mumbai who were visiting Coonoor and offered to get fully involved in the days events.  After 2 hours in the playground and the lake, exhausted they all settled down to some snacks and were eager to know then they would be coming here next.

Through such outdoors events, One Earth Foundation aims to foster within the children of local communities a sense of pride for the cultural and natural wealth of their region.  These children rarely get a chance to leave their villages.  Such excursions are a great way to connect them with the rest of the Blue Mountains and we hope that someday, these very children will grow up to conserve and protect them.
