Kurumba Art Revival Initiative

Kurumba Art Revival Initiative

KARI (Kurumba Art Revival Initiative) is sponsored by One Earth Foundation and supported by many.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
The Kurumbas, a primitive tribe resident on the steep slopes of the Nilgiri mountains in Tamil Nadu, traditionally practiced faith healing, were medicine men and had a unique form of painting.  With “development” and the “modern way of life” spreading all around them, these tribals are struggling to adapt and their traditional knowledge systems are rapidly disappearing.
With only 3 remaining artists who are unable to make a living practicing their traditional style of painting, and the younger generation showing little interest in learning and practicing  this art form,  the Kurumba paintings will soon be lost forever.
Development and progress will continue ceaselessly, yet it is upon each one of us to ensure that our rich cultural wealth and heritage is not a victim of this.  KARI brings together the remaining artists, children of the Kurumba tribe, primary & middle school children of Nilgiris and visiting students (under our Enviro Trips program) to create awareness, conduct art training workshops and develop livelihood opportunities for existing and upcoming artists.
