Students from Gwalior explore the NBR, its ecology & tribal cultures

OEF: The ecology trek

One Earth Foundation organized an exciting and challenging field trip for 30+ students from one of India’s leading schools based in Gwalior.  As this was the first time for most to the breathtaking blue mountains, the theme was:  The Nilgiris Biosphere region, its ecology and tribal communities

The enthusiastic students and their very dedicated teachers spent 4 days exploring Nilgiris and some of their experiences covered:

  • Trekking to the Raliah water reservoir and learning about hill regions and water crisis
  • Understanding the native ecology of the region and threats from invasive species and plantations.
  • Visiting a Toda Tribal hamlet (Inkithi) and learning about the history and culture of this tribe and its inter-relationships with other tribes of the region
  • Trekking to get an aerial view of the Madumalai Tiger Reserve and Bandipur National Park.  Understanding the geology of the Western ghats. The spot (7000 Ft above MSL) also provided a unique view of 3 states: Karnataka, Tamil Nadu & Kerala
  • Visit to a tea garden and factory
  • Visiting various sites in Ooty and Coonoor town like the Dodabetta peak, Bee museum, etc
  • Visiting a Kurumbas tribal hamlet and understanding their culture and history
  • Several students participated in a tribal art camp, learning the Kurumbas style of painting
  • Trekking in the Pandiyar river valley (reserved forest area)

Here are some images of their excursion and we look forward to many more students from their school  visiting the Nilgiris in the years ahead.
